Thousands of Medicaid applications in Ohio are backlogged with nearly two-thirds of those applications pending for 45 days or longer. This delay in applications is leading to applicants having little to no health care while they wait.

According to the executive director of the Ohio Job and Family Services Directors Association, a new online eligibility system, as well as insufficient staffing and policy changes, are only increasing the backlog.

Some applicants are currently receiving care but have no way of paying for it. Nursing homes are asking Ohio to pay for the past Medicaid costs of those applicants who have been waiting longer than 45 days, regardless if they are eligible or not.
